Matt Lindley

“I have founded a successful company delivering human factors training to non-aviation related sectors. In this capacity I speak internationally and recently was a subject matter expert on the BBC Radio Four programme ‘from the cockpit to the operating theatre’. I use the aviation Crew Resource Management (CRM) model and apply it to change management in a wide variety of industries. Clients include Astra Zeneca, Border Force, the NHS and The New York Times.

On leaving the Royal Air Force I was delighted to be employed by British Airways. The safety culture, combined with customer focus, appeals to my non-technical skills. I have flown both short and long haul routes.

During my time in the military, the ban on homosexuals serving in the Armed Forces was lifted. As one of the first openly gay pilots in the RAF, I have delivered a TEDx talk about my hugely positive experience. I focus on inclusive leadership, culture and the importance of allies. I also advise several blue chip companies on diversity and inclusion policy in the corporate environment.”

I was selected to become a military fling instructor. I graduated from Central Flying School (CFS) with a distinction and won the CFS Trophy – best overall instructor. After joining the Royal Air Force I was honoured to be one of the first ab initio co pilots to be posted to 32 (The Royal) Squadron, RAF Northolt. Key responsibilities including transporting.

Her Majesty The Queen, Members of the Royal Family and The Prime Minister world wide. Whilst serving on the VIP Squadron, I progressed quickly from Co Pilot to Captain in two years, and eventually became a Training Captain. During my time on the Royal Squadron I was endorsed to fly Her Majesty The Queen and flew in two central London formation fly-pasts.

After graduation I joined the Ford Motor Company graduate trainee programme. I was immediately seconded to JMC, Tokyo and helped integrate Japanese management techniques into dealerships in Europe.
